It is strongly recommended that you exit all programs before running

reader, it is recommended that you change to a software synthesizer
such as Sapi or Eloquence.

***Important:
This firmware upgrade will only work with DECtalk USB windows
98/ME/2K/XP driver kits version 1.13 or later. If you are not sure what
version you are running, it is recommended that you download and
update your existing DECtalk USB windows device drivers.
You may download the latest drivers from our web site at
http://www.axsol.com. You may update these drivers before
or after a firmware upgrade.

To update the firmware on the DECtalk USB, do the following:

  1. It is strongly recommended that you exit all programs and
restart your computer before attempting to update firmware on
     your DECtalk USB.

  2. If you must use a screen reader, it is recommended that you
switch to a software synthesizer such as Eloquence or
     Sapi.
Do NOT try to update the firmware on your DECtalk USB while
using the synthesizer with a screen reader or any other application.

  3. All firmware upgrades to your DECtalk USB must be done
over the USB port. Make sure the slide switch located on
the right side of the unit is positioned towards the back
of the unit. This places your DECtalk USB into USB mode.

  4. Connect your DECtalk USB to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
Turn the unit on by rotating the thumb wheel, located on the
right side of the unit, clockwise.

  5. Run the dtuflash.exe utility to begin the firmware update process.

  6. In the Edit Box, enter in "dtuee26.iic" for the
     file to be downloaded.

  7. Make sure the radio button labeled "Update Eprom" is checked.

  8. Click on the "DownLoad" button to begin the file transfer.
Wait for approximately one minute and a Message Box confirming
completion of the file download should appear. Just click on
the "Ok" button to acknowledge the message.

  9. Turn your DECtalk USB off, wait for about 30 seconds and
then turn your unit back on.
Failure to perform this step may cause firmware to hbe
     damaged.

  10. Restart the dtuflash.exe utility.

  11. In the Edit Box, enter in "dtuuseng.bin" for the file to be
downloaded. You may enter in the name of any of the six
availible speech modules. For a list of the six supported speech
modules, view the files.txt file included in this service pack.

  12. Make sure the radio button labeled "Update Flash" is checked.

  13. Click on the "DownLoad" button to begin the file transfer.

  14. The download process should take anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes
to complete. During this process, audible tones are sent
      to your computer's system speaker.

  15. A message box confirming completion of the file transfer
should appear. Just click on the "Ok" button to acknowledge the
      message.

  16. A message box asking whether or not you would like to download
another speech module should appear. If you would like to
download another speech module, select the "Yes" button and
repeat steps 11 through 16. Otherwise, select the "No" button
      and you are all done.

  17. Once you have exited the dtuflash.exe program, turn your unit
off, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn your unit back
      on to resume normal operation.
